I am an avid skier and hiker, raised in the Appalachian mountains and now living in the Rockies.
While at WVU I was involved with amateur radio & student rocketry. I'm an FCC-licensed Amateur Extra operator with the callsign WV8WH. Among other things, I led a large project focused on connecting local elementary school students with astronauts on the ISS, participated in NASA's Rocksat program and co-led IEEE's Region 2 Student Activities Conference.
During grad school at Virginia Tech I was fortunate to present several papers at IEEE conferences all over the country and publish work in several IEEE Transactions. My work focused on coordination in radar systems, with emphasis on distributed decision-making. I was able to explore some fundamental tools in machine learning including bandit models and Markov decision processes. My work then shifted to focus on the timeliness of information, using age-of-information metrics in distributed systems to derive optimal algorithms. I defended my work in November of 2023 and received my Ph.D.
Since 2024 I've been living near Denver, CO exploring the area and working as a research engineer at Rincon Research Corporation. Some of my hobbies include hiking, backpacking, skiing, learning to snowboard, traveling, training my dog Freya in agility, making hard apple cider from scratch, gardening tomatoes and other vegetables, and volunteering on nonprofit boards. Some particular goals I'm working towards include 50,000 vertical feet of hiking in 2025, collecting state highpoints, building an apple press and grinder, and planning to see the 2026 eclipse in Spain.
